The Debian BBQ

Yay backdating entries :P Boo for it being an entire month since the event so my memories are blurring :(

Things I do remember:

MEAT — Lots of meat. Meat of many different types. Tasty meat :3 Meat with buns and peppers and cheese and onion ^_____^

The Wii — A games console that even Kitty was impressed with~ Excite Truck was by far the most popular game, being played constantly for ~12 hours once people discovered it. I beat Phil Hands at it; while not impressive in itself (he hadn’t played before), I’m still chuffed to have beaten a guy who earns a kiloguinea a day at anything :P

Being in Nattie’s Cat Harem — Myself and a French guy who’s name I never heard said “mew”, and Nattie stroked us; she is awesome for random hugging~ She also did my hair in cute braids ^__^

Groping Enrico Zini‘s arse — He’s such a lovely guy; if I were gay, it’d be for him <3 He even complimented me on my groping skills XD

Beers — there were several types; one of which was a crate of Scrimshander, which Kitty was paying for, and I transported by hand…

Mao — which always seems to happen when you get lots of geeks together. This group seemed more experienced than at debconf, and thus managed to come up with more fun rules while avoiding annoying ones /o/

It took place over three days, which I think makes it the longest barbecue (or party of any type) that I’ve ever been to :3

Cambridge is still as lovely as I remember; we went punting up the river, and saw ducks and things ^_^ Photos are somewhere, not uploaded yet…

8 hours sleep + 4 hours lie-in is good for dreaming \o/

I’ve had several dreams about teeth falling out, and woken up with teeth hurting; I’ve been to a dentist and she said everything looked OK though~

Then one about alien invasion — the overwatch, coming in coventant dropships, invading a place which was geographically my primary school, structurally my secondary school, and included my halls of residence from uni…

Thirdly, I had a dream of picking up bricks and things in the same way that a statically charged balloon picks up bits of paper. Some mystical lady with “Thread” in her title saw this and took me as her “wake” (some sort of pupil? I don’t know if that’s actually a real word :S)

Lastly, I was walking round with a random lump of plastic, which I then broke — luckily, some random person had glue in their handbag; I spotted this and asked them for it, and repayed them with hugs ^_^

Our house is secure :|

Arriving home at ~2am, I figure I won’t ring the bell and wake people up, it’d be better to get in quietly; so I open the front door with my key, to find that the door is chained in a way that can only be undone from the inside. And so, on to hunting down an emergency key to get in the back door. I stick the key in, and find that there’s already a key there so I can’t get in from outside. Then the garage — I open it, but find that the inside door is also locked -_-. Then I climb the wall to get to the balcony door, also locked and only openable from inside…

Having failed at all possible locks, a new approach — I get back to the garage, pick out some tools, and start forcibly removing the inside door. I get most of the way through the process, but grabbing the effective part of the opening mechanism and turning it from inside results in it falling out, leaving the door jammed in a locked state…

Then onto another door, which I start scratching at; after a few more minutes of failing, I get jumped by my dad, who (rather sensibly) thought I was a burglar >_< Giggles were had, then I repaired the doors, and finally got to bed; thankful for parents with a sense of humour \o/

Debconf Photos

The hostel we were in first seemed to be falling apart (where it had been built in the first place) — note chicken wire instead of railings :-/ Also, being in the furthest possible room (all the way along the hall, fifth floor) was argh. And their breakfasts sucked too.

In comparison, the teviot building was awesome. It has space toilets, nice halls. There was a strange thing in the attic.

Teviot is also awesome as a student building. It has 4 bars, and a nightclub which plays lovely music (with cute advertising :3). Even the toilet graffiti was more interesting than I’ve seen anywhere else. They also have an arcade.

Also, I went up a mountain.

The edinburgh bike shop is notable for posters and banana holders.

Yes, this exists.

The night venue was quite nice, and had an organ.

The sever room was predictably messy.

It rained quite a lot.

Google-sponsored pizza :3

Debconf 7.3: Updates

Things have been busy, and I’ve been lacking network access for much of it…

Debconf itself started a couple of days ago, talks so far have been interesting, and those I’ve missed should have been videoed (over my cables ^_^). Much pizza has been eaten (haggis pizza exists :3). Also I needed a walk, so I went up arthur’s seat, a large hill / small mountain (250.5m) in the middle of the city.

Also, this uni is full of awesome ;___; Their student building has an arcade, a nice bar, a club which plays lovely musics; even the graffiti in the toilets is awesome (pictures pending upload).

In other news, I was a fool, and was fiddling with network settings on my desktop, while having no physical access — and because I’d left most of it still configured for UKC, when I rebooted, it dropped off the net. After another reboot and some tcpdumping, I figured that it was trying to be online, as, on a lan. Thus I changed the router’s IP to .50.2, logged in, started a screen with “sleep 30s && dhclient eth0”, then logged out and reset the router to .1.1 \o/ (The actual story had more argh with things getting disconnected at odd times, but I forget the details).

Also of note is the reason behind network fiddling, which is strangely similar to the power cycling story from the jargon file — I put the route config together such that it looked vaguely right, applied the rules, and bricked the box. I then look at the config, work it out carefully, understand exactly what’s going on, reapply the rules, and it works perfectly ._.

Debconf 7.2: Cable Monkey

First day, waking up at 5am, I spent much time packing cables, and failing to sleep.

Eventually, everyone else woke up, and we went for breakfast — the hostel only does “continental breakfast”, which is apparently a slice of toast and a cup of tea :-/

Then to the main venue, where we spent much time wandering and deciding what was to go where, and I crimped my first ethernet cable ^_^ And then several more, and the novelty wore off. I also learned about fire safety laws, and that it’s really hard to cover a historic building with cables~

Debconf 7.1: Travel

Travelling with each of us having our own body weight in computing gear was surprisingly smooth; starting from the first station where one of the station-dudes put up a ramp, and phoned ahead to the next station, it chained, until the second to last station, which had huge sets of stairs and no elevator /o\

Also on the train, I noted a teenage / very early 20s couple, with PSP in one hand and baby in the other, which made me ponder modern society D:

Much of the train time was spent attempting to sleep (having gone ~48 hours with only two 3-hour naps), and otherwise resting. Some of that was spent listening to the limited amount of music on my phone, which wouldn’t be noteworthy, except for the irony* of listening to “The Sound of Silence” right before “Halo”…

(* sentance may not contain actual irony)

To paraphrase:

[Kitty] fancy joining us for a pint?
[Shish] Sure, where are you?
[Kitty] Amsterdam.
[Shish] OK, see you soon~

Friday: Bus /o/

Saturday: Get on the ferry at ~1am, spend all my english money on DDR and Time Crisis 3. On the european side of the bus jouney, cheese on a stick!

Get to wfk’s place, sleep

Belgians arive. We all go wandering~ I note a mannequin with an interesting lack of clothes in a window, who then winks at me, and I realise I have arrived in the red light district ._.;;

More sleep

Go out for pizza & ice cream, except the pizza is some sort of pasty shaped thing. Wandering round, I note interestingly named shops, then we go to the pub /o/

Sunday: Out for a drink at a local brewery

Diving round places, finding windmills

Out for supper, made of icecream. The place we went into was geneally agreed to be far too upper class for us, and had the cutest waitress ever :3

Mon: Wake up, get on the train direct from Sloterdijk to Utrecht. Arrive at Amsterdam Central. Confused as to the meaning of “direct”, I stay on the train until the next stop, Sloterdijk.

Of note is that the train stations over there lack in signs — whereas in the UK you get a sign telling you where you are every few yards, theirs have one at each end of one platform; if you miss it, your next opportunity to find out if you’re at the right station is when the train is leaving it out the other end…

Finally arriving in Utrecht, we go shopping; there are many interesting places, like this one, where they sell dresses and gundam models, amongst other nerd things /o/

Then home~

Tuesday: On the bus home I overhead some people speaking what seemed like a foreign language, then I noticed some English in a heavy Jamaican(?) accent; listening carefully, it seemed to have a lot of english, but it ways I didn’t understand. Jive is real o_O?

I’ve been shot ;_;

Note to self: Next time you’re being taken hostage, and the hostage taker apparently has a moment of weakness and gives up his guns, make sure to disarm them before passing them on to the policeman (who actually turns out to be an accomplice).

I have no idea why I had that dream, nor why my fellow hostages were grammar school aquaintances :3

Hay on Wye~

Oshi I never hit “post” :O

Thursday: Up early, get the train to Mike’s. Wardriving to HoW we find ~300 APs, several open, many in the middle of nowhere… Arriving at HoW, we go exploring book shops. Back to camp late at night, to have chicken and mashed potato for dinner~

Friday: Woken by Mike flicking water over me -_- Mass bacon, sausage, beans and egg for breakfast. We spend the several hours driving through hills, getting jammed with 5-10 cars trying to move through a barely-single lane road… We finally arrive at the car park we were aiming for at about 6pm. I note a sign saying “car park closes at 7pm”, so I ask “will we be back here within the hour?”, to which kitty replies “yes”. And thus we went off on the walk, along a long path, to a dam. The walk back was much like the walk there, but in reverse. When we get back to the car park, at 8:30, people discover that the gate is locked… After much shoving from most, and awesome driving from wfk, we ended up getting out along a small footpath, up a hill, over a bridge, through the pedestrian entrance…

Saturday: Wake up at some crazy hour in the morning, freezing cold. Given the choice of staying awake for a while and being woken later on by Mike, I stayed up, playing with my phone. After an hour or so’s work, I managed to get VNC working on it \o/

Once other people were up, we went off to walk up Pen-y-Fan~ About a third of the way up, I noted that I was getting way ahead of everyone (except wfk, who was miles ahead of me o_o), so I decided to take a rock up with me, to make things more challenging… Two thirds of the way up we stopped for food, and my rock was noticed, to which most in the party questioned my sanity, and some made references to geogrophilia ._.; Most of the party ended up turning back at this point, as they needed to be back to pick up a new hire car; Jambo, Louise, and I carried on to the top, and round, and took a longer but flatter route back down, past a lake~

Sunday: I woke up at 5am, aching at every joint from the previous day’s walk. I also needed the toilet very much. Being unable to get back to sleep, I went to the toilet, then spent all my 10p coins in the shower. After that it was still cold, and my joints were freezing up, so I ran some laps round the campsite. Then had tea and rice for breakfast.

Several hours later, other people got out of bed, and we went kayaking /o/ I found it quite enjoyable, and was the only kayaker who didn’t fall over \o/

Once we got back we had a barbecue, with lots of meat.

Monday: More time was spent browsing book stores, then some of us split off to go open street mapping~
